The railway bridge asset manager and the contractor repairing a viaduct and replacing the back of wall timbers were seeking a solution that would deliver the same performance but without degradation or the need for regular maintenance. The back of wall timbers are subject to permanent moisture contact and are difficult to access and inspect. Due to the nature of the site, some on site fabrication was essential, using existing tools and methods. Sicut was approached for a new long life solution, which would not require extensive redesign was sought.
Sicut composite sleepers were identified as the ideal solution; they were both completely resistant to all forms of decay experienced in such applications and did not require any special working instructions or tools during fabrication.
